Measurements first, and take them properly: a maker would far rather have a full set taken with a tape than a dress size. Say whether you want a one-off or a repeatable pattern you can have made again, because a pattern you own is worth paying for if there is any chance of a second. Name the fabric or the hide if you have a preference, and the occasion and date if there is one. For fitted work expect at least one fitting, in person or by post, and build that into your timeline. Allow four to ten weeks.
