The process
How Need It Made Works
From posting a brief to confirming the piece arrived, in three steps.
- 1
Post your brief
£0Write down what you want made. It does not need to be technical, and it costs nothing.
- A photo, a rough sketch or a plain description is enough to start. A sketch with the sizes on it gets you sharper prices, and a CAD file is better still where the job has one behind it. Nobody expects you to be an engineer.
- Makers who work in your material are alerted, usually within moments of posting, and others find your brief by browsing open work.
- They can ask you questions in chat before they quote, then bids come back over the following days. Comparing them costs nothing and you are free to walk away.
- 2
Accept the bid you want
HeldChoose on price, delivery time and the Maker's profile and past work. Accepting a bid is not the moment you pay.
- The price on each bid is the total you would pay. It includes UK delivery and the Need It Made fee, and nothing is added at checkout.
- Accepting does not charge you. The Maker confirms they can take it on first, and only then does the payment page open. If they cannot, or say nothing for three days, the project goes back to the other bids and nothing has left your account.
- When you pay, we hold the money rather than passing it on, and the Maker starts knowing it is there. Keep talking in chat while it is made, because a question asked early is cheaper than a change made late.
- 3
It arrives, then the Maker is paid
ReleasedOnce we confirm the delivery, you get 48 hours to check the piece over before any money moves.
- Every project goes out by tracked courier. The Maker adds the tracking number when they ship, so you can follow it from your project page.
- Confirming the delivery is a step we do ourselves, not something the courier reports. Saying the piece is right pays the Maker, and if you do not get to it the project completes on its own at the end of the 48 hours.
- If it does not match what you agreed, raise an issue inside that window instead. Your money stays where it is while it is sorted out under the Refund Policy.
POST YOUR PROJECT FOR FREE
Posting a brief and getting bids back is free. You pay nothing until you accept one.
How you’re protected
- Secure card payments. Payments are handled by Stripe, a global payment provider. We never see or store your card details.
- Your payment is held until the work's done. We hold your payment and only release it once you’ve received your item and confirmed it’s right, or 48 hours after delivery if you don’t respond.
- Judged against what was agreed. You and your maker agree the exact spec up front. If the finished item doesn’t match it, you can raise an issue and we’ll resolve it under our Refund Policy.
