Wooden puzzles and brain teasers, ride-on toys and dolls houses, garden-scale games, a board game prototype before it goes anywhere near a manufacturer, replacement pieces for a set that has lost one, and oversized versions of small things for a shop window or a village fete.

Say who is playing with it and how old they are, because that decides the finish, the fixings and whether anything can work loose. If it is for a small child, say so explicitly: a maker will reach for different glues and paints. For a game prototype, say how many copies you need and whether it has to be playable or presentable, which are two different jobs. Simple wooden pieces are usually a two to three week build; anything with a mechanism takes considerably longer.
