Best practice for Makers

How to win the right work, set expectations, and get paid without surprises.

1 min read

The best Makers on Need It Made win work by asking good questions, then protect themselves by setting expectations clearly before they start. A strong profile, careful bidding and consistent communication are what turn a one-off job into repeat earnings and good reviews.

  1. Build a strong profile

Add a company name and logo. Select the skills you have and the project types you want to hear about. Add photos of past work and past projects, and describe any qualifications, standards, insurance and capabilities, with photos of your equipment or workshop.

  2. Read each project carefully

Read the project properly and ask plenty of questions before you bid, so you are clear about exactly what the Customer wants.

  3. Bid well

Only bid once you have asked enough to price it meaningfully. Make sure your bid covers a tracked delivery service; the Need It Made fee is added automatically. It is a good idea to sketch out what you think the Customer is asking for, with dimensions, and share it in chat to get sign off.

  4. Work together through the chat

The chat is vital. Check it consistently, upload progress photos, and ask whenever you are unsure. The chat history is used by Need It Made if there is ever a problem, so it is your security too.

  5. Finish and deliver

When the project is complete, send the Customer photos of the finished item. Enter the tracking details and send a photo of the package. Once it is confirmed delivered, the Customer has 48 hours to raise an issue; if there is no response, the project completes automatically and you are paid.

  6. Find your next project

Once your first project is finished and paid, find another and build your earnings.
